BACKGROUND
Whenever a prospective client first approaches Appleseed with a behavior change challenge, our first step is to conduct a 45-minute pro bono consultation over video conference. This gives us a chance to meet them, provide immediate value, and explore a fit.
Here is a fictional scenario:
The founder of a reputable nonprofit social enterprise called ClearWater Cambodia has just reached out to Appleseed. This is exciting because we remember meeting their founders at the Skoll World Conference a few years back. In our internal conversations, we said they seemed to fit our ideal client profile.
We are somewhat familiar with their business model — they implement plumbing in informal settlements and villages of Cambodia to bring potable water to local eateries (providing clean water for cooking and drinking). The organization’s revenue comes both from philanthropic grants and from thousands of eatery owners, who pay a subscription fee for chlorine tablets. Their impact comes from preventing foodborne and waterborne illnesses.
Here is the email we received:
“We heard of Appleseed from a couple of our funders and we are interested in talking with you about a possible collaboration to develop a strategy around handwashing. We have always included handwashing stations as part of our plumbing projects for eateries, but we haven't put any extensive focus on the behavior change needed to ensure maintenance and proper usage of the handwashing stations. Given the attention raised around hand washing and hygiene in general during the pandemic, we’ve decided to put a concerted effort on increasing the rate of people washing hands using the clean water we provide. We’d love to discuss how we might collaborate to make this work! Would you be free to chat within the next week or two? Thank you, -Julia Monroe, Co-Founder & Executive Director of ClearWater Cambodia”
